FAO calls for vaccines and equipment to combat FMD in North Korea and noise


The UN Organization for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has urgently requested vaccines and equipment to combat FMD in North Korea. They have also called for a concerted effort to modernize the North Korean veterinary services.

FAO, together with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), visited North Korea from February 27 to March 8 at the request of the Government of China. The mission concluded that the ability of the country and its veterinary services to detect and contain outbreaks FMD needs to be strengthened significantly, with the implementation of best practice on biosecurity measures and improving the capacity and infrastructure of the country's laboratories.

The mission members visited a number of collective farms and the national veterinary laboratory and various field centers dedicated to animal health. Organizations oriented to the veterinary authorities of North Korea on the sampling and handling of samples of FMD. Now, veterinarians North Koreans take new samples to be sent to an international reference laboratory for analysis.
